Gluten Free Products available in India

Celiac disease is a digestive disorder that occurs in reaction to gluten, a protein found in rye, barley, wheat and oat.

As, Indians having its main food wheat, it is difficult to decide what to eat. There are many stores in Delhi NCR which provide Gluten free products. Thanks, to all those store owners who decided to do so.

I want to take an initiative to approach, all big brands, to tell us what all products are Gluten free in their production houses.

  5. Heyy are you sure that no wheat means gluten free?

  6. No wheat is good news but it necessarily doesn't mean gluten free. But, Lays Classic Salted chips (commonly known as Yellow :D) is absolutely safe to eat and is gluten free in US. It has highest chances of being gluten-free in India too. But unless it is marked gluten free, no one can be too sure.

  8. Unfortunately the statement above from th PepsiCo representative indicates that the listed products are made on the same lines as other products that contain wheat.

"At PepsiCo, we aim to provide safe foods for consumers and apply measures to avoid cross-contamination but please note that the other products manufactured by us in our plants in India are made on the same lines manufacturing above listed products."

Those who have Celiac should refrain from eating products that are processed in a facility that also processes wheat, as cross contamination may occur. Ideally, you'll want to find products that are certified gluten-free, meaning that they have been tested by a third party organization to verify that the presence of gluten is below a certain threshold (usually 20 parts per million). This article from very well fit disucsses the organizations that typically perform the certifications:

I am uncertain if many products manufactured in India pass through these certifications, so please proceed with caution. Testing devices can be purchased that will test food on the spot to see if they contain gluten, with Nima being a popular choice. Unfortunately, they are quite expensive at the moment.

Many Northern Indians are being found to have Celiac disease recently, and it has been theorized that it is because they share some genetic lineage with Europeans who also have a higher than average affliction rate of the disease. I do hope that progress on testing and certification spreads as awareness of the allergy spreads, as it's a disease that significantly impacts the health of those affected.
